Welcome to one of the most exciting parts of your wedding festivities—your engagement shoot! Your wardrobe choices will have the biggest impact on the success of your session. Below are a few key tips to help you make the most of it:
- Dress up!
These photos will be with you for a lifetime, decorating your home, wedding reception, your website. Opt for extravagant, detail-oriented wardrobe choices, not something you typically wear. - Go with classy colors:
Lighter tones for ladies would work best, while neutrals or black for the guys will keep the look timeless and elegant for years to come. Avoid dark or any bright colors that might clash with the environment for ladies’ outfit. Light-colored dresses also reflect light beautifully, which is essential for my photography style. - Fashion-Forward Choices:
My brides often choose engagement shoot outfits similar to what they’d wear for their bridal shower—think fun statement pieces with feathers, oversized puff sleeves, scarves, or other unique elements. As an editorial photographer, fashion plays a huge role in my work. Keeping it bold and fashion-forward to achieve that elevated, editorial look is essential. Save the more traditional looks for a date night and embrace high-fashion styles for your shoot.
Where to buy.
- Revolve. 2 day shipping, free return and many designers to choose from. One of the most flattering brand IMO is For Love & Lemons
Anthropologie little white dress section also has some amazing pieces
Budget options: lulus, shein, aliexpress
These are definitely hit or miss, but could be a good option for the 2nd outfit especially if you are planning in advance. The good fit or quality will not be as impactful as statement accessories such as oversized sleeves. In the past, we had a great luck even with cheap wardrobe version if they have some fun accessories that I could leverage on!
The dress top should be decorated/have more statement pieces than the skirt, since the majority will be portraits or 1/2 shots.

One of the most common questions I get is how to look the most flattering in photos.
✨ Puffy sleeves—whether flowy or structured—help create the illusion of a more petite frame on camera through contrast.
✨ Wearing your hair down with some volume frames the face beautifully and adds a flattering touch.
✨ A well-fitted suit for the guys creates a sharp, structured silhouette.
✨ If you’re going for a fake tan, I recommend a clear tan. Avoid adding color to your face as it can age the skin on camera.
